Wine Tasting

One of my closest friends from childhood has been out here visiting this week, and we decided to take her out for an afternoon of wine tasting. Since we had a car, we started off in the Marin Headlands and continued on to the northern part of Sonoma county. Sonoma is the lesser known of the two wine-producing counties in the bay area (with Napa being the more famous..), but it is better for a more relaxed and tourist-free tour. Plus! many of the Sonoma wineries don’t charge for tasting.

We went to Alder Brook, Everett Ridge, and Bella, and I am proud to say that I bought my first case of wine! I bought a split case of Sauvignon Blanc and Red Zinfindel at Everett Ridge (which I would highly recommend!) Pictures will follow… promise!

Geni.com

Brendan found an awesome tool to document and track family genealogy. Its called geni.com The site has an easy-to-use interface that allows anyone to add information about family members including birth date, spouses (current, ex, and deceased), maiden names, and MOST IMPORTANTLY email addresses. The email addresses are the way that the trees grow! By simply putting a few emails on your tree of those in your branch, you could spark a revolution because it only takes a few determined folks to fill up the tree.

If you are interested in more detail, you can edit the info of those that are entered in the tree and keep track of the county of birth and death, order of siblings, occupation(s), and nicknames.

The other good part about the program is that it will keep track of birthdays and anniversaries and send email notifications (if you want it to) so that you never forget a birthday or anniversary again! If you have family photos that you would like to store, just use geni–it will keep track of the photos and allow you to tag them so that you can see everyone in the photo. Those that are adventurous can even create their own profile!

As you can probably tell.. I’m suuuper excited about this website, and I hope to see you all on geni!

Mr. T monument…

A perfect example of the quirky people that live here in San Francisco… Some guy made and collected dolls of Mr. T. A bar in the Tenderloin (one of the sketchier neighborhoods of San Francisco) put them on display for a short while by pinning them up on their wall. Preston took pictures of the whole event, and you can see them by clicking here.

I’m 21!

Yesterday was my birthday!! I went into work like a good little intern, and all of my co-workers took me out to lunch to celebrate. We decided to go to Chevy’s so that I could be thoroughly embarrassed and sang to. Needless to say, it worked. =) After work, I headed off to my birthday celebration that Brendan put together. We went to a vegetarian thai restaurant that was BYOB (and.. strangely enough served meat..). Despite being a Monday, there were quite a few that came out to celebrate with me. After the restaurant, we headed off to a bar crawl through the Tenderloin. The night ended with a quick stop at a taquería and a taxi ride home. (or so I’m told) Sorry for the lack of pictures.. there are only 2, and they are currently on Preston’s phone!

SFdrunk.com

We decided that since we have such a sweet (…and expensive) apartment, we should have weekly cocktail hours at our house.  It all started because we had a TON of leftover salads and food from Brendan’s Midwest Salad-themed graduation party… and now has evolved into a weekly cocktail hour and a website!  So, if you’re in San Francisco and reading this, come on over every Tuesday from 6 to 10.  We have a new theme each week!  If you’re not here, you can check out our website at sfdrunk.com.

Whew! Its been a fast couple of weeks!

So.. I haven’t posted in awhile.. but to sum up the last few weeks I have

delorespark.jpgGone to 1 horse race and lost $18 but got a free t-shirt! “Run” 1 crazy “race” called bay-to-breakers in which 50,000 people throw tortillas, dress up in crazy costumes, build floats (usually having to do with carrying a kegger), and drink heavily

Rolled down 2 hills in a park (this park in fact..)

Eaten burritos 3 times in Delores Park (see Left) and gone to 3 awesome concerts (Mason Jennings, Manu Chao, and Afrodesiac–a brass band with African influence)

Gone to at least 4 of the 578 taquerías within 4 blocks of my apartment. (A taquería is pretty much kicks the shit out of all other Mexican restaurants.. and its fast food style.)

Attended 5 different different events in 1 day.. namely the Mission Carnival parade and festival, an awesome designer fair in Hayes Valley, Opera in the Park, and drank 5 drinks at local bars in the mission.. (does that count?)

So thats about it for the last few weeks.. =) I’m lookin’ forward to my parents coming in a few weeks!

Marin

Brendan’s parents and grandma are here for his graduation, so we have been touring.. getting up at the crack of dawn to get a head start on what is a loooong day of crazy adventures.  This morning we all piled into the Charger they rented to trek through Marin county (the lush hills that are on the northern end of the bay).  We started by crossing the Golden Gate bridge and heading up the hills near the ocean.  We went up and down more hills than I could count, visited a scale model of the hydrology of the San Francisco Bay (2 football fields in area), took in a Frank Lloyd Wright civic center and post office in San Rafael, walked Muir Woods, and caught some of the best views I have ever seen.  We ended up in Fairfax going out to dinner with some of Brendan’s wacky relatives that none of them had ever met.  All in all a good day.

Arrival

I made it to San Fran! I got here yesterday. Brendan met Preston and I at the airport with a stupid little mini cooper. For those of you who have never been in a mini cooper.. it has no trunk and about enough room for 4 relatively small dwarfs, so it was perfect for all of our 15 bags of crap plus the 3 of us. The only way to fit bags in was to put the top down and hold on, but it was well worth watching Preston hold the bags down in the back seat while we drove with the top down on the freeway in 50 degree weather.

Somehow we got home with all our luggage, but the best was yet to come.. I went inside to see our stupidifyingly awesome apartment. It is well worth the exorbitant rent that we are paying. We have a stainless steel kitchen (which I might add is 4 times larger than my old Minneapolis kitchen), a tea room, and a sweet living room with a plasma screen TV. As if that isn’t enough, we have a backyard with a porch that looks out onto one of the oldest churches in San Francisco. The boys even chopped through the backyard (which previously resembled an equatorial jungle) and found a table, 4 chairs, a path through the “garden”, and a grill.

Code Code Code

I made another web page.. using ASP! I modified code! EXCITING. It automatically pulls information from databases that I created and displays it for you wonderful people online. You can also delete, update, and insert entries (except not on the “Assignment” one because I used auto number and now I can’t re-upload the modified files. sad. anyway… have fun perusing my websites!

Saturday Afternoons.

Saturday afternoons are perfection. No homework has to be done until tomorrow.. no classes to go to.. no pressure.. it is the only time of the week that you can forget about all responsibilities..

Sunday is when the week begins.. all the homework and lists of things to do..Monday through Thursday is full of completeing tasks.. and Friday is full of working BUT Saturday is different.. it is for whatever you truly want to do.. laying in bed till noon just because you can, pjs and calling the friends you meant to call all week, cold pizza for breakfast and good music, watching movies and finishing books.
